Turn Things Up With a 15-Inch Double-Port Car Subwoofer

If you are a music fan who likes to turn up the bass when you play your tunes in the car, a 15-inch double-port car subwoofer may work for you. With two subs side by side, you'll have great audio power at your disposal. When you're using models that each measure 15 inches, you'll be capable of producing a lot of sound.

Is size important for subwoofers?

Yes, the size of a subwoofer does matter, especially since bass frequencies are relatively long and require space to be generated. Fifteen inches is on the larger side of the scale. A sub of this size can better hit those very low frequencies. In achieving that deeper range, there may be a slight change in crispness. These size of subwoofers can generally create very high volume.

Do two subs double the audio output?

Having two side-by-side subwoofers in your car does not exactly double your output, but it does positively affect your sound quality. With a double port, you have a greater surface area, and as a result, more air can be displaced with each boom of the bass drum. This translates into louder notes, and you can usually get more precise and clear sounds when using a double subwoofer system.

What kind of enclosures or boxes are there?

You could have a subwoofer box that is:

  • Sealed: A sealed car subwoofer box will not let air pass through it. As the cone moves to the rear of the box, the resulting air pressure that builds up can help snap the cone back into place. The sound made from sealed sub boxes is often described as being crisp and clear audio.
  • Ported: A ported subwoofer box can be quite loud with relatively less power. Because air can pass through the enclosure's opening, which may be at one side of the box or another, there is not a buildup of pressure. The cone can move more freely, creating a booming audio quality.
  • Dual-chambered: This is a combination of the two previous kinds of subwoofer enclosures. The subwoofer enclosure sits inside a sealed box, which is attached to a vented one. The sounds coming out of the subwoofer box will have power behind them, and they may be limited to a more specific range of frequencies.
What might these subs and their enclosures look like?

Most subwoofers are black, metallic, or gray, and their enclosures are typically in the same color family. Subwoofer enclosures can be covered in a carpet-like material, or they could be coated with plastic. The cones located inside the subs could be made out of special paper, a synthetic material, or a composite material.
