How Large Format Works

The key to every form of photography has always been resolution. The greater your light gathering area, the more detail you can capture in your pictures and the better the results.

What About Film?

In order to find the right camera back, you have to understand the difference between large format film and 120 or other roll film. It is not the same at all. Large format 4 by 5 cameras use sheet film, where each exposure is separate. While it does require some adjusting to get used to the system, it offers a number of benefits as well as some tradeoffs. All you have to do is slide the holder into the camera back, pull the dark slide and you're ready to go. For your second shot, just flip the holder and repeat. There are a few things you need to remember:

  • Dark Slide: Always remember to turn the slide after each shot as you don't want to expose the sheet twice.
  • Loading: Always load your holders in the dark.

What About Rolls?

While 4 by 5 film doesn't come in rolls, there are ways to use a 4 by 5 camera with 120 roll film. This is in addition to using smaller sheet film with various adapters that let you insert smaller sheets into the camera. There are two main options for using smaller stock with your existing camera.

  • Roll-Film Backs: These combine a 120 film size mask with everything you need to use roll film in a sheet camera. You can take advantage of the larger lens to get the shots you want without the need for loading in the dark or changing holders with every second shot.
  • Medium Format Bodies: The second option is to get a back that lets you attach your existing medium format camera body to your 4 by 5 camera.

Shooting Large Format Film

There are a number of advantages to shooting film in 4 by 5 format. For one thing, you don't have to shoot a whole roll before you can develop a picture as each sheet is processed individually. You can also combine color film on one side of the holder with black and white on the other so that you capture the same scene in both formats without having to do more than flip the holder. It's a great way to compare photos that you can't really manage with any other kind of photography. One thing you should also consider is to process your own film whenever you can. This gives you much more control over every step of the procedure so you can get exactly the image you want without having to wonder about what they will do to your pictures once you ship them off to the lab.
