Collectible Safety Razors
Vintage safety razors have become collectibles that are still useful as tools for grooming or simply as display models. They are available in different colors, materials, and styles, such as the single-edge open comb or the double-edged version.
What kinds of vintage safety razors are available?Shaving razors are available in a wide array of configurations that include stainless steel blades and aluminum or wooden handles. Some razors may feature detailed designs or patterns etched into their handles. The most common forms of collectible safety razors include items such as:
- The double-edged safety razor: Double-edged razors for home shaving were among the first challengers to the classic straight blade. They are the early versions of shaving devices that use disposable blades.
- Cartridge razors: A cartridge razor is similar to a double-edged safety razor, but the whole head of the unit is removed when you replace the blade. Some cartridge razors may use heads with multiple blades that make contact with the skin during a shave.
- Disposables are designed to be discarded after a few uses, but some early models from the 1960s may be vintage items.
Most vintage safety razors will use some form of stainless steel disposable razor blades for the shaving process. And while the handle of your item may be stainless steel as well, there are several other materials that are commonly used for safety razor grips. The most common of these materials include things such as:
- Plastic, such as Bakelite
- Aluminum
- Wood
While different collectible models may have different parts, most of them share some common features. The primary parts of these tools include the following:
- A guard or safety bar next to the sharp edge.
- The load bar or center bar. This is the part of the holder that will help to center the edges within the comb housing.
- The central shaft or main grip.
- End caps or balls.
- Open comb teeth.
- Adjustable double-edged safety razors may also feature dials to adjust the closeness of your shave.
If you would like to use your collectible double-edged safety razor as a shaving tool, you can follow these basic steps:
- You may wish to prepare your face prior to the shave. If so, you can use things like hot water, a hot towel, or pre-shave oil.
- Use your hands or a brush to apply an even amount of shaving cream across your face.
- Use your free hand to pull the skin of your face and neck taut and in the opposite direction from which you'll shave.
- Hold the safety razor at an angle of approximately 30 degrees and make contact with the skin.
- Use short but even strokes that follow the grain of your facial hair. Going against the grain of your hair may result in pulling or tearing the hair out rather than cutting it.
- Don't apply heavy pressure during the shave.
