When the Apple iPhone 6s was first introduced in late 2015, it made quite a few waves. As an upgrade to the iPhone 6, it brought a number of new features. In addition to the upgraded, faster A9 processor, the iPhone 6s made a number of improvements to its predecessor.

What Sets the 6s Apart?

When the iPhone 6s was first introduced, it showcased some touch and feedback technologies.

  • 3D Touch: The method of navigating through menus via touch was borrowed introduced with the 6s. While not all third party apps take advantage of the 3D Touch, it is available in the native apps already on the phone.
  • Touch ID: This is not new to iPhones or even smartphones in general. What the 6s did was improve the response time of the fingerprint sensor. Touch ID became so responsive that a finger tap on the home key to check the time can open the phone.
  • Taptic Engine: Tactile feedback came with the 3D Touch functionality. The Taptic Engine basically provides a bit of vibration or other physical feedback when using the iPhone.

How Do Photos Compare?

For many, the smartphone has replaced an everyday camera.

  • Image Stabilization: One of the features the 6s does not have is optical image stabilization. This doesn't necessarily matter much for photos taken in bright light, but it can make a big difference for capturing moving subjects or low light images.
  • iSight: When Apple first brought out FaceTime, the front-facing camera was called the FaceTime camera. The rear-facing camera is the iSight camera. On the 6s, the iSight camera is significantly improved over the iPhone 6, while the front camera on the 6s remained at 5MP, the same as the iPhone 6. However, the rear-facing camera jumped from an 8 to 12MP.
  • HDR: Both the from and rear facing and FaceTime cameras are capable of HDR photography, thereby potentially improving both selfies and other snaps on the device.

What Features Should I Consider?

Your wireless carrier as well as phone type are just the start of your decisions, but looking at features is just as important.

  • SIM card: Obviously, if you intend to use your phone for calling, you will need to ensure it has a SIM card. These phones generally take nano SIMs. Make sure your SIM is compatible with AT&T. If you have an iPhone already, you should be able to transfer the one from your current phone.
  • Color Choices: The Apple iPhone 6s did not introduce any new phone colors. Space gray, rose gold, gold, and silver are all available.
  • GB Available: Even with the 12MP camera on the iPhone, the smallest capacity is only 16 GB. Since these devices do not have external SD card capability, it's important to consider space needs when making a choice. If necessary, you can go as high as 128 GB.
