What is medium-format film?

Medium-format, also called 120 film (not to be confused with 120mm), is a still photography film format that requires specific cameras and equipment. The images produced appear on media larger than 24 by 36mm, which is full-frame in 35mm photography. It is smaller than the 4 by 5 inches that are considered as large-format photography.

Medium-format in digital photography means using adapted cameras or cameras using larger sensors than those with a 35mm film frame. Medium-format cameras can be converted to digital cameras by retrofitting them with digital camera backs, particularly the earlier models that used sensors that were smaller than a 35mm film frame. Medium-format film is normally wrapped around a plastic spool, yielding 12 to 16 images depending on the camera and film masks used.

What is the image quality produced by these cameras?

With the combination of big film stock and the optic quality of the lenses used in these cameras, you'll see sharp images rendered with little to no distortion or chromatic aberration. They feature very smooth falloff from in and out-of-focus areas within the frame. The bokeh, or aesthetic quality of blurring, produced using these cameras is also very smooth, with broader strips of even tones in the mix.

What is a medium-format sensor?

Image sensors are solid-state devices that capture light and converts what is seen through a viewfinder or LCD display into an image. The physical size of the sensor's pixels controls the amount of light captured for each.

The tonal ratio difference between black and white is the dynamic range. The use of microlenses today maximizes the light captured, and that power determines the sensor's dynamic range. Noise level and pixel size manage the available dynamic range, which provides a simple, natural color resolution that provides accurate color recordings and smooth tonal transitions.
