Collectible Cigar Lighters

Cigar lighters and torches are an important tool for those who enjoy smoking cigars. Over the years, certain types of cigar lighters have become collectible items. Both cigar smokers and nonsmokers can appreciate the quality and style of a collectible cigar lighter.

What types of collectible cigar lighters are there?

There are three main types of lighters that are used with cigars:

  • Dobereiner's Lamp: Produced up until the late 1800s, these collectible lighters for cigars were only available to affluent smokers at the time. These large cigar lighters are collectible due to the fact that they were the first lighters to produce a flame using platinum.
  • Flint lighter: Made during the early 1900s to the 1930s, flint lighters were more available to the public at large. These lighters for cigars were relatively small in size and could fit into a pocket. These lighters required wicks and flint, which had to regularly replaced.
  • Butane lighters and torches: With the introduction of the butane lighter in the 1930s, more people were able to get their hands on a portable lighter. These lighters come in a variety of shapes and sizes, some of which are highly sought after.
How can a Zippo cigar lighter be dated?

Starting in the 1950s, Zippo added dates to their cigar lighters and cigar torches. That allows you to get an idea of when the torch lighters for cigars were made just by looking at the bottom of the item. You can use the date codes to determine when a collectible lighter was made:

  • 1950s to 1960s: The dates were represented in a series of dots during this time period.
  • Late 1960s to early 1970s: The dots were changed to lines.
  • Mid-1970s to mid-1980s: The lines on Zippo cigar torches were changed to slashes.
  • Late 1980s to 2000: Roman numerals were used to date the torch lighters.
  • 2001 to present: The code on the torch lighters was switched to a series of ordinal numbers and letters.
What considerations should be made when looking for cigar lighters?

For many users, it is important that the collectible torch lighter is functional. However, if you only plan to display or collect the cigar butane torches, these aspects may not be as important. Here are a few points to consider:

  • Fuel tank: The larger the butane fuel tank, the less often you have to refill it.
  • Side trigger: If the lighter has a side trigger, it can be easier to light the flame for the cigar.
  • Second trigger: This allows you to light a second flame for your cigar if you need to.
  • Recessed lighting nozzle: This keeps the flame lower in the torch so that you can light your cigar even when the wind is not cooperating.
  • Flame-adjustment knob: Depending on the conditions you are in, you may need to adjust the flame to get your cigar lit. A larger knob that can be adjusted with one finger makes it easy to control the flame.
