Complete Engines for Sale: Isuzu Rodeo

If you're looking to buy new or preowned complete engines for an Isuzu Rodeo, then you can find a selection of these engines for sale on eBay. Since its production in the late '80s, the company has used different types of engines. Here is a brief overview of each engine type.

Types of Isuzu Rodeo engines

If you're buying a used engine for the first generation of Rodeo, then you will likely come across four-cylinder gas and diesel engines. These are the original engines identified by their respective types, such as the X engine, the Y engine, and the J engine. A 2.3 L 4ZD1 I4 and 4JB1-T turbodiesel I4 are some well-known examples.

Besides these engines, the first-generation Rodeo may also come with General Motors 60-degree V6 engine. It is distinguished by throttle body fuel injection and iron heads. Another preferred choice for consumers is the family of all-aluminum 75-degree V6 gasoline engines. You can easily identify these engines by their 75-degree cylinder head bank angle. In fact, these engines are also known for their early adaption of gasoline direction induction technology.

Another GM engine used in Rodeo is a Family II straight-4 piston engine. These are often used for higher capacity vehicles and feature a cast-iron block, an aluminum head, and a timing belt-driven valve train. These Family II engines were mostly used in the second generation of Isuzu Rodeo.

What kind of diesel engines were used in Isuzu Rodeo?

Affordable Rodeo vehicles were equipped with two distinct types of diesel engines. The first generation of Isuzu Rodeo used three variations of the Isuzu J engine. These were direct-injection diesel engines in 2.5-liter or 2.8-liter displacement. At a later stage, 3.0- and 3.1-liter inline four-cylinder engines were also used in Isuzu Rodeo first-generation models.

The 2.2 L X22DTH I4 diesel engine is the only variant used in the second generation of Isuzu Rodeo models. These were the original inline-four engines that are easily identified by the mountings of all cylinders in a straight line.

X22DTH I4 diesel engine

Isuzu discontinued the use of Rodeo J-type engines and replaced it with the simpler X22DTH diesel engine in the later models. Experts believe that the transition from the powerful J-type to simpler design in the second-generation vehicles is due to the small, lightweight and compact size of the X22DTH. The decreased mass usually results in greater fuel efficiency in cities. In fact, the engine is very easy to remove and reinstall, which makes it a great choice if replacing it with another rebuilt or cheap remanufactured Isuzu engine.

How do you choose the right complete engine?

When looking for the right complete engine, make sure to get one that is like the blown engine that is currently in your car. Although you may want to replace a gas engine with a diesel engine, remember that the process will be more involved and cost more. If you want to keep the cost low, then choose the same type of complete engine replacement that replicates your car's blown engine.
