Faux Leather Sofas, Loveseats, and Chaises

If you are in the market for sofas, loveseats, or chaises, you will need to decide what type of materials you want. Faux leather is an excellent option for many consumers. It offers many of the benefits of real leather plus some additional features.

What are sofas, loveseats, and chaises?

These pieces of upholstered furniture are commonly found in living areas and bedrooms of a home. A sofa is a long seat with built-in armrests and a back. Two or more people can fit on a sofa. A loveseat is a similar piece of furniture; however, it is only designed to fit one or two people. A chaise is a chair for reclining with a complete leg rest. It may or may not have armrests.

What is faux leather made of?

Faux leather is made from synthetic materials and then embossed with a grain similar to real leather. It is then backed with fabric. There are two common types of faux leather: PVC or poly materials such as polyurethane and polyamide microfiber. Alternative material types include cork leather from oak trees, kelp made into ocean leather, ultra-suede created from scraps of polyester, and Swedish koskinn.

What are the benefits of faux leather?

Many people are drawn to faux leather furniture products for all of their benefits. Faux leather offers many benefits, including that it is:

  • Similar to real leather in appearance and comfort
  • Animal-friendly
  • Environmentally friendly (polyurethane materials)
  • UV fade resistant
  • Available in many finishes from high-gloss to suede
  • Able to be cleaned with a damp cloth
  • Made of non-porous materials that let liquids bead instead of letting them soak in
How should you maintain synthetic leather furniture pieces?

Like most pieces of furniture, you will need to wash and maintain your faux leather sofa, chaise, or loveseat in order to keep it looking and functioning at its best. Part of maintaining faux leather loveseats and other furniture is to protect them. No matter which type of synthetic material you have, you should apply a protectant treatment before its first use and approximately twice a year thereafter. This will make your furniture piece easier to wipe down during your normal cleaning routine. Follow these steps for cleaning your synthetic leather furniture:

  • Wipe it down about once per week, when a spill occurs, or when you notice it is soiled.
  • Use a microfiber cloth and warm water mixed with a minimal amount of mild dish soap, dishwasher detergent, or even a mild bar of soap; using harsh detergents can cause synthetic leather to dry out.
  • Gently wipe down the entire faux leather chaise or other furniture starting from the top and working your way down.
  • Allow it to air dry, or wipe it dry with another soft or microfiber cloth.
  • If your sofa has a lot of debris on it such as crumbs, loose dirt, or dog hair, you may want to vacuum it before wiping it down.
