Features of the Kenko KFM Light Meter

A light meter allows you to measure how much light there is within the entire scene that you are photographing so that you can set your camera's exposure time properly. While digital cameras have a built-in reflective light meter, which measures the reflected light, a hand-held Kenko KFM light meter measures incident light. The incident light is that which falls on the actual subject, allowing you to determine exact exposure levels for photographs.

What are the key features of the KFM 1100?

The KFM 1100 is a user-friendly light meter with an ergonomic design that makes it easy to hold and use. It measures ambient light, as well as light from flash attachments, and can be used in a wide range of photographing conditions. The key features include:

  • Exposure meter with a built-in microprocessor which measures the flash light and natural light
  • Detection of a wide range of light, from EV-2.0 to 19.9
  • A wide range of shutter speed capability, from 30 minutes to 1/8000 of a second
  • An easy to read LCD window display
  • Easy to set ISO with an up and down dial
  • Ability to switch the measuring mode from ambient to cord, or non-cord
  • Aperture readings change automatically when different shutter speeds are selected
  • Can be used with, or without a sync cord
  • A custom settings mode for users to personalize special settings
  • Includes cine mode
How do the KFM meters work with the light diffusers?

To help you get the most accurate measurement in different situations, KFM meters can be used with a variety of KFM light diffusers. There is the 270-degree spherical diffuser, which reads omnidirectional light. For light that is coming in from different directions, the spherical diffuser sets up your lighting ratios and determines the different measurements between two light sources.

Also, there is a flat diffuser for measuring unidirectional light. This is useful when photographing flat, two dimensional objects such as paintings, murals, or pages from newspapers and magazines. If you are looking for accessories that will be helpful in portrait photography, the reflected light attachment is useful. This measures the light bouncing off a subject and will help with more accurate skin tone definition.

Does the KFM meter measure mixed flash and ambient light?

The KFM-1100 has the capability to measure natural and flash lighting at the same time. There is a specific analyze function for mixed lighting on the display. The meter shows the percentage of flash light in the analyze scale. When you have this reading, this allows you to make any shutter adjustments necessary and get the picture you want.
