An Introduction to Kyocera Flip Smartphones

Established in April 1959, Kyocera produces electronic devices of all types but is known for the cell phones it began producing in 1990. Kyocera introduced its Android smartphones in 1997 and currently manufactures Android smart, flip, and bar phones. When you're looking to replace your phone or upgrade to a new device, consider what Kyocera offers in its line of flip phones.

How does a flip phone differ from other smartphones?

A flip, also referred to as a clamshell, features two square or rectangular operational pieces connected by a hinge. When opened, the interior upper half features the screen, while the interior lower half features the keyboard. When closed, the interior screen and keyboard are protected from scratches and wear and tear, a common complaint amongst users of tablet-shaped cells. Some models feature a smaller display on the outer front panel; others feature the same-sized LED or AMOLED screen on both the exterior and interior. In these cases, use of Gorilla Glass is common. When closed, the cell resembles a bar model. When the hinge appears on the short side, it's referred to as a flip, but when the hinge appears on the long side, it's referred to as a clamshell.

For what carriers does this brand make native devices?

Although Kyocera cell phones may work on a variety of carriers, four major U.S. carriers offer cell phones from this company, including:

  • AT&T
  • Sprint
  • T-Mobile
  • Verizon Wireless
What features do these cells offer?

These devices range in storage capacity from 256MB to 256GB. The battery type and life of each depend on the device model. You'll find flip models with 3G or 4G capability. Various models offer Bluetooth, an autofocus camera, LED flash, GPS, internet browser preinstalled, music player, a built-in flashlight, and a speakerphone. Some cameras also provide function as a video camcorder. Each phone features two displays; one on the exterior, commonly a black and white display, and a color display on the interior. Select models come with an SD card included. These vary in storage size. Flip phones are offered in the colors black, blue, gold, gray, red, silver, and white.

What apps can you add to a flip smartphone?

A smartphone uses the Android or Brew operating system. If your mobile runs Android, you can add any application from the Google Play store designed for that version of the operating system. If your mobile runs Brew, your carrier offers apps through its store. The carrier determines which Brew games and apps to offer.
