Mechanical Automatic Watch Movements

Watch movements are the part of a watch that help keep it running and accurate. There are many kinds available on the market and include antique and modern movements. If you want to work on a timepiece, whether modern or vintage, it's important to understand movements and how they keep a clock running.

What are mechanical watch movements?

The watch movement is the movement-based element that moves the gears and allows your watch to keep time. The movement controls the hands of your watch and makes sure that it stays accurate while on your wrist. There are three kinds of watch movements on the market. These include manual, automatic, and quartz movements.

How many parts make up a movement?

In a manual movement, there are several components to consider. These include the crown, mainspring, gear train, escapement, balance wheel, dial train, and the jewels. The crown is what you turn to wind the watch every day. Once you wind it, the power will be converted into the mainspring.

Automatic movements don't require regular winding because their change of position on your wrist winds it. This energy comes from the rotor, a part that swings freely and winds the mainspring. It also helps to prevent excessive winding.

How do quartz watches differ?

These types of mechanical timepieces also have a movement that helps them run. However, they are different than both of the other types because they don't require any winding. They get their power from a battery that lasts about 1-2 years before being replaced. The parts in this type of watch are much different than those in other forms and include

  • Integrated circuits
  • Crystals
  • Stepping motors
  • Dial train
Why do these watch elements have jewels installed inside?

Automatic and manual watches of all kinds have what are known as jewels installed near the gear trains. These parts are important because they help to reduce excessive friction on various parts inside of the timepiece, including the gears and even the hands of the watch. Some jewels will be made out of real rubies while others are synthetic.
