Why Do I Need a Graphics Card?
A Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is integrated into the motherboard of every laptop and desktop computer to provide an image to your display. However this is only suitable for low-level graphics like emails and surfing the internet. Dedicated GPUs, like 1 GB Nvidia GeForce graphics cards, are separate pieces of hardware with their own memory. They are devoted exclusively to graphics processing.
What are the advantages of a graphics card?
One of the biggest benefits of installing a dedicated Nvidia GPU is improved performance. But there are many other benefits when you install a graphics card, such as:
- The increase in performance does not only benefit tasks like video streaming and gaming, but it also makes other tasks like processing images in Photoshop easier and faster.
- With graphics cards you get a wider and more modern variety of video ports than those that are found on most motherboards. Your motherboard may only have a VGA and a DVI port but your graphics card might have those ports and an HDMI port, a DisplayPort or even duplicate ports like dual DVI-I ports. This will allow you to display a image on multiple monitors.
Which 1 GB card should I choose?
Depending on your needs and whether your motherboard can accommodate a single-slot or double-slot PCI-E GPU, you might consider one of the following Nvidia 1 GB video cards:
- EVGA GeForce 9500 GT. This 1 GB DDR2 card has a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1600 and a clock speed of 550 MHz. It has one dual-link DVI-I port and one 15-pin D-sub VGA connector and interfaces with the motherboard via a single PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot.
- ASUS Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT. With one DVI port and one HDMI port, this Nvidia card has 1 GB of DDR2 memory and a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1600. It is compatible with Windows 7.
- MSI Nvidia GeForce GT 220. This video card has one DVI port, one HDMI port, a VGA output, and 1 GB DDR2 memory. It interfaces with a PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot and fully supports DirectX 10.1.
- Nvidia 210 GeForce. This graphics card has 1 GB of DDR3 memory with a 128-bit memory interface. It supports DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL 3.1. It runs on Windows 2000, Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows 7.
