What Do I Need to Know About 200mm Telescopes?

A telescope is an optical instrument used to make distant objects appear larger and nearer. A Skywatcher explorer 200p contains an arrangement of curved mirrors and lenses. Rays of light are collected and focused on these lenses and mirrors and the resulting image magnified. Examples of Sky-watcher telescopes include:

  • Skywatcher Explorer 200p 8" Telescope + EQ5 Mount Kit
  • Skywatcher Explorer-200p (EQ-5 mt) Newtonian Reflector Telescope
  • Sky-Watcher Quattro-8S 200 f4 Parabolic Dual-Speed Telescope #10238 OTA Steel
  • Skywatcher Explorer 200 PDS EQ5 Dual Speed Telescope

What are some of the important parts of a telescope?

  • The lens and mirrors - The lens constitutes a convex lens and concave lens. They all work together to collect and control the movement of light. Lenses are responsible for focusing on distant objects, the field of view, resolution, and magnification. There is a primary and a secondary mirror. The primary mirror is the principle light-gathering surface of a reflecting telescope. A secondary mirror, on the other hand, is the focusing mirror element in a reflecting telescope.
  • Telescope tube - The main mirror is located here. It has a diameter of 8 inches and has a tube cover. The focal length can be can be set by turning the knob located under the visual back. The focuser is a mechanism which allows the telescope to adjust its focus by turning the knob or gear.
  • Eyepiece - This is the lens you actually look through. It is curved outwardly on both sides and prevents the ocular lens from falling down. The other function of an eyepiece is to enhance a clear view from the lens to the object.
  • Finderscope - This is a small telescope mounted on the main tube. It locates and directs the telescope to the main object for a clear view.
  • Tripod - It is made of at least three stands. It is responsible for holding and retaining the telescope on its surface. A steel tripod can support a sky-watcher explorer-200P in a slanted, straight, or inverted position. It also enables the observer to move an explorer-200P to different directions with ease.

How do I select the right telescope?

Telescopes can be used either for astronomical, terrestrial viewing, or both. Although an all round one sounds attractive, it is advisable to go with one option. This is because it will not offer a strong focus. Decide what type of viewing you will be doing more and buy the right telescope that suits your needs.

  • The aperture - Aperture refers to the diameter of the telescopes main optical component. Its size determines how much you can capture. The more the light that is captured, the more objects you can see in the night sky.
