The type B version cord classified as 1.1 and 2.0 are identical, so they can be used interchangeably and will fit into one another seamlessly. A 3.0 type B female cord features a different receptacle shape than the 1.1 or 2.0 versions, which means that they will not fit together properly unless you are using both a 3.0 male and female cable. However, the male 3.0 versions will still fit into the receptacles of the 1.1 and 2.0 female pieces.
USB 3.0 version type B connectors are a different shape than previous ones, and so the plugs do not fit in previous receptacles. However, the updated USB 3.0 version type B cord was designed in such a way as to allow previous USB version B plugs from USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 to fit with USB 3.0 type B receptacles. This issue is due to an updated receptacle that allows for more points of contact, therefore, ensuring a more seamless connection when both cords are version 3.0.
